GETTING A 'BREAK'

From time to time everyone needs some time out.

MI Fellowship Victoria can now offer a range of options for people with a mental illness and their carers and families across all the regions that have a MI Fellowship Victoria  service, which includes  the rural areas of Hume and Gippsland, Barwon, and many areas of the Melbourne metropolitan area and the Mornington Peninsula.

We have a range of options:

  1. Flexible Short Term service provides respite for limited periods of time, often in a person's home.

  2. Planned Short Term breaks are delivered on a regular basis over a planned time. The ‘break’ may include a support worker visiting you at home or joining you on an activity of your choice.

  3. Occasion Limited respite is arranged to cover a specific event or situation when a carer is unable to offer their usual support, e.g. when planning to take a holiday or attend an interstate event.

Respite may also be available in urgent, unexpected situations such as when a carer is ill. All breaks are individually tailored. Breaks are available in circumstances not covered by other respite types.

  4. Retreats, with or without an education component, are scheduled throughout the year in all regions.   Depending on the current demand these retreats can be for the carer, the person with a mental illness, or both.

  5. Short term after hours activity groups. Each of these small groups are designed to bring together people with a similar interest and provide the support to pursue this interest.

  6. Regional Specific Respite Services are services that have developed to meet the needs of the regions over time and are currently only available in the specific region named below:

For example, Hume Breakaway Respite is available to people in and around Seymour, Shepparton, Benalla, Wangaratta and Wodonga areas.

‘I achieved more than I would have ever thought I would. I discovered a lot about other people and myself. The camp changed my life’

  7. O’Meara House is a 5 day residential respite for persons with a mental illness that provides friendship, fun and activities.

Stays in O’Meara House can be arranged for people who reside in many areas.
