GETTING AND KEEPING A JOB

Something is clearly wrong. In an era of chronic labor shortages, 75 per cent of Australians with a mental illness are unemployed. Getting and keeping a job is vital to community connection, self-confidence and independence. We need to do more to find people with a mental illness meaningful, appropriate work. MI Fellowship aims to do just that via education and employment programs.

Education and training

Mental illness often interrupts education which is why, as a registered training organisation, we provide return to study options. Our Certificate of General Education and Introduction to Community and Event Volunteering are first steps for many of our participants to getting a job. Learn more about our return to study options here.

Evidence shows that employment services get better results when integrated with clinical and community-based services. That’s why we work closely to provide employment services alongside St Vincent’s Mental Health in Hawthorn and East Melbourne; Alfred Psychiatry in Armadale and St Kilda; Orygen Youth Health in Parkville; Peninsula Health in Frankston. We also offer employment services out of Hastings Community Centre.

MI Work is a partnership between Goulburn Valley Mental Health, local employment service Worktrainers and Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria. Each partner invested money to fund an employment specialist based at Goulburn Valley Mental Health services. The program
started in January 2007. It has worked with more than 30 participants and secured employment for over a dozen of these job seekers. Call: Worktrainers on 5832 2511

Social firms
Social firms are businesses employing a mix of people with a disability and people without
a recognised disability. They aim to be financially viable, community-based businesses, offering market salaries and conditions that pay their own bills and grow.

Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria supports the Social Firm Managment Group to run miCleaning which, as the name suggests, offers cleaning services, mainly to commercial premises. Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria has recruited and provided support and training to 10 employees with a mental illness to date and plans to grow.
